Recent dingo attacks on K'gari, Australia's largest sand island, highlight the challenges of balancing tourism with wildlife conservation. The island's high visitor numbers and a lack of awareness about safe interactions with dingoes have contributed to an increase in encounters, prompting calls for better management strategies.

Dingoes on the popular tourist island of K'gari , formerly known as Fraser Island , have been increasingly interacting with humans, leading to several recent attacks, including one on a toddler. This surge in violent encounters has sparked debate about how to manage the island's dingo population and protect visitors. The previous Labor government proposed a plan to cap vehicle numbers during peak periods to reduce overcrowding and dingo-human interaction.

However, the current LNP government has scrapped this plan. Instead, the tourism and environment department is working on a new management strategy.K'gari, off the southern coast of Queensland, is a world heritage-listed site renowned for its stunning beauty. Spanning 123 kilometers and covering over 166,000 hectares, it is the world's largest sand island. Its diverse ecosystem encompasses towering sand dunes, pristine freshwater lakes and creeks, and lush subtropical rainforest. The island's pristine beaches and colorful sand cliffs draw millions of tourists each year, with estimates suggesting 500,000 to 800,000 visitors annually. The Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation, the island's traditional owners, recognize dingoes, or wongari, as sacred animals. An estimated 200 dingoes roam K'gari, and their distinctive appearance has become synonymous with the island. However, experts believe that the island's dingoes are genetically distinct from mainland dingoes, possibly due to their long isolation and adaptation to the island's unique environment.Unfortunately, the high number of tourists visiting K'gari, coupled with a lack of awareness about how to safely interact with wild animals, has contributed to an increase in dingo-human encounters. Some tourists, eager to get photos or selfies, feed the dingoes, habituating them to human contact and creating an association between people and food. This behavior, combined with campers not properly securing their food, anglers leaving bait unattended, and picnickers having food out in the open, provides easy access to food for the dingoes, making them more likely to approach humans. This situation is particularly concerning because K'gari lacks other land-based predators of a size that could pose a threat to humans. This absence of other predators, combined with the abundance of food sources provided by tourists, has led to a situation where dingoes are increasingly comfortable around people, resulting in more frequent and potentially dangerous encounters
