New South Wales Health is urging the public to be extremely vigilant for symptoms of meningococcal disease - an infection that has the potential to turn deadly in hours if left untreated.
Although rare, meningococcal disease is quite a severe illness that can be deadly if not treated with immediate medical intervention.
“We are urging the NSW community to be vigilant for symptoms, even if they have been vaccinated, and to seek medical assistance early if they are concerned.” NSW Health warns that meningococcal has the potential to kill within hours after contraction if left untreated. Babies, toddlers, adolescents, and young adults are the most at-risk group for contracting the illness, specifically children under five and young people aged 15 to 25. However, people of all ages can be infected.
