We chat with AliceDarling director Mary Nighy about the process of mapping out Alice's internal journey and approaching the psychological authenticity of abusive relationships:
Currently available to see in AMC Theaters, Alice, Darling focuses on the internal struggles of a woman in a psychologically abusive relationship. While vacationing with her two best friends, Alice begins to view her boyfriend, Simon, in a new light. Caught at a crossroads and hesitant to leave him for good, Alice struggles to let Tess and Sophie in on the harrowing truth of her romance.
I was really drawn to the friendship aspect of the film, because I think that there are lots of different entry points for this film for different people. For a lot of people, like me, it will be strong friendships and how difficult it can be to tell your friend the truth, and how it can be really something that you wrestle with.
It's interesting because I think when a character is on the page, sometimes you can be unsure, especially because so much of it is performance-dependent from the male actor, by Charlie Carrick in the eventual film.
For example, at the dinner, she talks to them about having a sleep orgasm or a sex dream and feeling very guilty about it, and she's able to read their reactions. They're surprised that that would be something that she would need to feel guilty about. But then also in the flashes, you have very, very quick moments at the beginning, which are quite hard deliberately to understand.
