I physically recoil when strangers touch me: it’s a deeply embedded, automatic response after a lifetime of facing abuse. And I know I am not alone.
However, these figures do not tell the full story – they do not show the lasting impact these incidents have on disabled people and they do not account for all the times disabled women have not been believed. When another stranger took control of my wheelchair, without my consent, and moved my bra strap, I was told I was wrong; friends told me the action was harmless and he meant nothing by it. The disbelief didn’t surprise me. Our society tells disabled people that we are simply wrong when we experience abuse, that people are “just trying to help”. We must be misinterpreting the actions of the well-intentioned.
