Collingwood football boss Graham Wright thinks the Magpies will take an improved list into 2024 despite being “a little bit surprised” by Jack Ginnivan’s request to leave the club.
The premiership forward joined Hawthorn on the final day of the trade period after requesting a trade on Thursday morning, with Wright claiming the Pies had no knowledge of his desire to leave the club until the day before.
“We’re disappointed … this is something that he sought, and in the end I wouldn’t say we were happy about fulfilling his request for a trade, but we understood what he wanted,” Wright said. “Players can pick and choose what they want to do … it’s a little bit unusual, obviously the day before a grand final, but it wasn’t the end of the world either,” Wright said.
He would not be drawn on whether the Pies would pursue a delisted free agent as coverage for Murphy, with Will Gould , James Stewart and Tim O’Brien among the key defenders available from other clubs. “There’s a whole range of tests he has to have before he meets with them … we’re hopeful that goes well for him, but his wellbeing the most important thing.”
