Disclaimer is the weekly dose of erotic melodrama, intrigue and glorious scenery chewing you need right now — from none other than Alfonso Cuarón.

An erotic psychological thriller about a respected investigative journalist and the publishing of a mysterious novel inscribed with her old secrets.Ten years on from the premiere of Big Little Lies, prestige TV is still swimming in the wake of its cultural reset: from Sharp Objects to The Perfect Couple, A-Grade actors and indie auteurs have flocked to literary adaptations steeped in outrageous scandal, domestic dissolutions and glistening gilded cages.

Working alongside longtime collaborator Emmanuel Lubezki , Cuarón crafts one of the most visually arresting shows in recent memory, but struggles to harmonise his ambitious style with the innately conventional material.Cate Blanchett once again relishes the role of a woman besieged by controversy: a hard-hitting investigative journalist named Catherine Ravenscroft whose fall from grace is precipitated by the publishing of an ominous new paperback inscribed with old secrets.

The show plays coy about exactly whose perspective we're seeing, and the extent to which the novel obfuscates the truth — but Catherine recognises enough in the manuscript to make her hate herself "all over again", and to immediately spur her into damage control. Kevin Kline is known as a great comedic actor from films like Fish Called Wanda. In Disclaimer, he takes on a much more serious role.Disclaimer's later chapters struggle to eke tension from the slow, inevitable grind of narrative gears locking into place. Those tuning in to watch an age-gap relationship turned disastrously wrong, with its echoes of Queen of Hearts , may be taken by surprise — but the ending, with its considerable emotional wallop, makes the journey worthwhile.
