Star Trek: Discovery had the potential to fully realize the USS Enterprise's original mission, but failed to do so over the course of the show.
Star Trek: Discovery could have revolutionized the five-year mission from Star Trek: The Original Series, but the show has so far failed to accomplish this during its run. Premiering in 2017, Discovery was the first Star Trek TV show to air since Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled in 2005. The show ushered the franchise into a new period of growth and development, facilitating the creation of several other series and bringing together old and new audiences alike.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Although a significant time jump to the 32nd century ensured that everything from Star Trek: Discovery season 3 onward has been set in the far future, the show began as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, exploring the Federation a decade before Captain Kirk and his crew embarked on their five-year mission.
If it weren't for conflicts like the Klingon War or The Burn, Discovery might have been tasked with an assignment similar to Kirk's original mission, and would have been better equipped to fulfill this mission than any other Star Trek ship, including the Enterprise.
Discovery Should Have Been Star Trek's New Enterprise If the spore drive had been used to its full potential, Star Trek: Discovery could have become the spiritual successor to Star Trek: The Original Series, with Discovery acting as Star Trek's new Enterprise in the modern era. The spore drive set Discovery up perfectly to accomplish the directive of TOS's five-year mission: "...to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations.
However, there is still the potential for the show to put the spore drive to better use. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 could still utilize the spore drive for exploration rather than crisis response, especially because the story for the new season seems to involve Discovery in a treasure hunt for "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy".
