The Guardian of Forever needs to make its return to Star Trek: Discovery in order to make crossovers happen with the 32nd-century-set Star Trek series. The upcoming Star Trek: Discovery season 5 promises a change in tone from the dire, galactic threats of seasons 3 and 4. Captain Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery are chasing "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Introduced in what is considered the greatest Star Trek: The Original Series episode of all, "The City on the Edge of Forever," the Guardian of Forever was a sentient time portal discovered by Captain James T. Kirk's Starship Enterprise. The oblong-shaped Guardian existed on a long-dead planet, and it was the vessel through which Kirk and Spock time-traveled to 1930s New York on a hunt for a rogue Dr. Leonard McCoy and save the timeline.
Star Trek: Discovery bringing the Guardian of Forever back in play in season 3 is too good an opportunity to waste. Crossovers have the potential to be historic Star Trek events. For instance, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' upcoming crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks is one of the most eagerly anticipated episodes of 2023.
Discovery Can Show Star Trek Its Optimistic Far Future Star Trek: Discovery's jump to the 32nd century successfully reset the first Star Trek on Paramount+ series, and it created the canon of the distant future. However, it also isolated Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery to an era far removed from the Star Trek franchise's focal points of Strange New Worlds' 23rd century, Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy's late 24th century, and Star Trek: Picard's early 25th century.
Conversely, Captain Burnham and the Discovery have brought much-needed hope and progress to the 32nd-century Federation that was devastated by The Burn for over a century. Discovery season 5 is poised to make the "darkest" Star Trek series lighter and more adventurous.
