Young trees and shrubs at eight parks and reserves across Melbourne's south-east were targeted by vandals between Friday and Sunday, according to Glen Eira City Council.

A Melbourne council is urging witnesses to come forward after nearly 200 young trees and shrubs were "unlawfully" cut down in a suspected act of vandalism over the weekend.

"Some of these trees are very rare and may not be able to be replaced, including the Red Gums at Boyd Park which were grown from seeds collected from the trees that were removed for the Murrumbeena train station," the statement read.Glen Eira City Council said it had filed a police report and investigations into the matter was ongoing.

In June, Glen Eira was recognised as a "Tree City of the World', having pledged its commitment to grow the municipality's tree canopy from 12.5 per cent to 22 per cent by 2040.
