The black balls which shut down beaches in Sydney's eastern suburbs have been found to have traces of human waste.
A team of scientists at the University of New South Wales have discovered a"disgusting" trace material in the black balls which washed up on Sydney beaches in October. The black balls which shut down beaches in Sydney 's eastern suburbs have been found to have traces of human waste.
Mr Beves analysed the balls with his multi-disciplinary team of scientists and concluded they contained oils, fats, and high calcium levels that could be linked to fat, oil and grease deposits which are most commonly found in sewage systems. "This combination suggests a mix of substances derived from both fossil fuels and plant or animal sources.
"Perfluoroalkyl substances, steroidal compounds, antihypertensive medications, pesticides, and veterinary drugs were detected, consistent with contamination from sewage and industrial runoff," UNSW said in a media release. "Sydney Water confirmed soon after the balls were reported that there were no issues with the operation or maintenance of the Bondi or Malabar water resource recovery facilities.
