The industry watchdog finds John Scott guilty of 'extremely serious' professional misconduct over non-compliance in multi-storey buildings in Darwin and Palmerston, but was limited to investigating two out of 11 complaints.

The structural engineer behind Darwin's non-compliant apartment building scandal has been stripped of his registration and found guilty of "extremely serious" professional misconduct. The watchdog investigated allegations relating to the work of certifying engineer John Scott, mostly relating to flaws in concrete transfer slabs

"It was a matter of good fortune that no-one was injured due to the practitioner's professional misconduct and that the defects in the engineering design came to light prior to the building being occupied," the board found. A total of 11 complaints were referred to the BPB last year, following an audit sparked by concerns raised in 2017.

"There [were] investigations that needed to be done, the work that needed to be done around that, it was complex work that had to be done, so there were timeframes around that that needed to be followed," she said. The department has not publicly identified the affected buildings, but Ms Lawler said they had been made safe.
