to commemorate the occasion, writing that she “may have created the first ever trans character for the Disney Channel.”That character, Nikki, is an influencer who is played by trans actress Juliana Joel, who is also possibly the first out trans actress to play a role on a Disney Channel show. Both Joel and Reed wrote on Instagram that the episode was a dream come true, especially for people who could not have imagined seeing trans characters on children’s TV.

Lastly, she added that being on the show was more meaningful than just her childhood wish fulfillment. “With all of the anti-trans hate and narratives in media and society, it was a win,” Joel wrote. “I claimed a dream and space for myself while so much of the world is trying to erase me & my community. And now I get to be that person I wish I had to watch on TV growing up.”

Reed echoed that sentiment, writing that Disney Channel was also her escape as an “Asian closeted queer kid” in Kentucky. “I cannot fully articulate what it means to me personally that now a young queer person in rural America can pop on the Disney Channel and witness a funny, nuanced trans character that they can relate to,” Reed wrote. “And I pray in my heart that they hear the very clear message: You belong in this world and are included.

While Nikki is likely the first live action trans character in a Disney Channel show, the honor for the first trans character overall goes to the nonbinary character, who was voiced by nonbinary actor Avi Roque. Regardless, we’re of the opinion that the more trans characters in kids’ TV, the merrier.

Conservatives, however, would beg to differ. Disney has recently been at the center of a lot of LGBTQ+-related controversies. The brand recently came under fire for a clip from the Disney+ show
