A character from the gangland series Underbelly was based on the 52-year-old officer, Stuart Bateson, who was found guilty of leaking confidential information about an anti-corruption investigation.

After building a distinguished career within Victoria Police busting notorious gangland crooks, Stuart Bateson has had an "ignominious fall from grace".He was fined for his disclosures to a junior colleague about an anti-corruption investigationHe was found guilty of leaking confidential information about a secretive anti-corruption investigation to a colleague out of what a magistrate has described as "basic human instinct for self-preservation".

IBAC was probing allegations of improper influence into an investigation by Taskforce Salus, which examines harassment and predatory behaviour within Victoria Police. In 2018, Bateson was called to give evidence at a hearing examining suggestions of sexual misconduct within the force and was served with confidentiality notices, requiring him to keep the details a secret.

In deciding not to convict Bateson, the magistrate said he had given significant weight to Bateson's prior good character. The officer, upon whom Roger Corser's character in the gangland series Underbelly was based, has been diagnosed with chronic PTSD of a substantial severity, which doctors say has been longstanding and undiagnosed."Over the years, your reputation and talent as an investigator, and dedication to your job, meant you're involved in many roles of great responsibility, which meant of course more than your fair share of traumatic experiences," he said.
