Shadow Home Affairs Minister James Paterson has slammed pro-Palestine supporters who held up a photo of a terrorist organisation leader at a rally in Melbourne.

An image posted on social media showed a man carrying a framed portrait of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, on Tuesday night.Nasrallah this week praised the Hamas attacks on Israel, saying it"sends a message... that the Palestinian cause is an everlasting one, alive until victory and liberation".

"There was a protest rally in Melbourne last night where a picture of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, a listed terrorist organisation, was proudly displayed on the streets on Melbourne. That's a shocking thing," he told Sky News Australia's Laura Jayes. Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton told 3AW's Neil Mitchell he gave his officers clear instructions on Tuesday to keep a close eye on the activity coming out of the rally.
