Shadow Defence Minister Brendan O’Connor says the federal government’s decision to scrap the fleet of Taipan helicopters is another “massive waste” of taxpayer dollars.

Cost and performance issues have plagued the European-build Taipan helicopters, and now up to 40 Black Hawks will be purchased to replace the Taipans, costing the Defence Force $7 billion. Mr O’Connor said Labor would like to be briefed by the defence department, ADF, and government about “why we had to do this”.
“Really, the scrapping of the Taipan fleet is another example of massive waste of billions of dollars of taxpayer money on defence assets that have failed,” he told Sky News Australia. “We need to know why we’ve had to go so long with the Taipan fleet if they’re not effective; how much money has been wasted.”
