DJ tiesto and model Annika Backes had a wedding weekend that was like something out of a James Bond movie set at Amangiri. Go inside here.
DJ and music producer Tijs “Tiësto” Verwest and model Annika Backes met at Catch restaurant in New York City back in February 2015. The two had a few mutual friends and hit it off right away. “We started hanging out for the next two months, and when Coachella came around, we decided the day before to go together,” Annika says. “We spent the weekend running around the festival and having the best time, just the two of us.
The desert is the place where, Tijs says, he can relax from “crazy DJ life.” “To be in a landscape that has hardly been touched by people is really special,” he adds. ”You can see all the stars at night, and the sunsets and sunrises are so special and unique. It’s pretty much the most romantic place on earth.”
Tijs actually likes wearing suits, but as his work doesn’t exactly call for one, he was excited that this occasion would give him the chance to go for it. “I love Tom Ford and everything he designs, so it was easy for me to pick a suit for the rehearsal dinner and wedding. Annika and I are obsessed with James Bond and everything he stands for. He’s like a timeless modern masterpiece, and that’s definitely the look I was going for with my tuxedo.
The reception following dinner was made to feel like a nightclub, and the mirrored arches used during the ceremony were repurposed as entryways. “When everyone walked into the reception, which was in the same place where we had our ceremony, it was completely transformed,” Tijs explains. “We made a mirror tunnel that opened to an ice luge in the shape of our initials so everyone could take a shot and get the party going.
