Novak Djokovic overcame a groin injury to defeat Carlos Alcaraz and advance to the Australian Open semifinals. Aryna Sabalenka also secured her spot in the final four after a thrilling three-set victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Both Djokovic and Alcaraz are looking forward to a rematch that will be a battle of attrition.

'Djokovic clash will be better tennis!' | 00:43On the biggest night session of the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic moved a step closer to a history-making 25th Grand Slam title, trumping young foe Carlos Alcaraz in four sets at Rod Laver Arena for a place in the semifinals.

The second set on Tuesday night is the first that the World No.1 has dropped all tournament, with Sabalenka at one point briefly the underdog to win, and go on to claim her third straight Australian Open. Coco Gauff was knocked out by Paula Badosa, which means a blockbuster semi-final between the American superstar and the world number one is no longer on the cards.

Djokovic and Alcaraz have produced some of tennis’ greatest matches in recent years with epics at Wimbledon, Roland Garros, Madrid, Cincinnati and at the ATP World Tour Finals. While Djokovic leads their head-to-head four to three and is the King of Melbourne Park with 10 crowns to his name as he chases a record-setting 25th grand slam title, he has not beaten Alcaraz in a Grand Slam match — 0-2 all-time, courtesy of a pair of Wimbledon final defeats.

If Alcaraz’s practice session on Tuesday evening is anything to go by, expect this to be a war of attrition. That was the case on clay in Paris last year when Djokovic won the Olympic gold medal he so desperately craved in an enthralling best of three sets encounter, and it was too in London in 2023 when Alcaraz claimed his maiden Wimbledon crown in five sets in four hours and 42 minutes.
