Novak Djokovic fought through a leg injury to defeat Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling Australian Open quarter-final, setting himself up for a potential record-breaking 11th title at Melbourne Park.
Novak Djokovic is on the brink of history after overcoming a leg injury to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open following a hard-fought victory against rising star Carlos Alcaraz . The 24-time Grand Slam champion and 10-time Australian Open winner battled back from a one-set deficit to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4, setting himself up for a potential record-breaking 11th title at Melbourne Park.
Djokovic, heavily strapped around his left thigh, required medical attention after just 47 minutes into the match on Tuesday night at Rod Laver Arena. He admitted that he was unsure if he could have continued playing if the medication hadn't taken effect and if he had lost the second set. \'The medication started to kick in and it helped, no doubt,' Djokovic said in a post-match interview. 'I had to take another dose … I had to. I didn't know. To be honest, if I'd lost that second set, I don't know if I would have continued playing,' he added. 'But I felt better and better, and I managed to play a great couple of games to end up (winning) the second set … I started to feel better and started to move better. 'It didn't bother me, it didn't create any hindrance towards the end of the match. Obviously, when the medications start to release, I'll see what the reality is. Right now, I will try to (stay) in the moment and enjoy this victory.' \While Djokovic celebrated his victory, Alcaraz, despite his loss, captured the attention of fans and commentators with his apparent mimicking of Djokovic's early injury hobbles. Commentators James Blake and John McEnroe noted Alcaraz's actions, suggesting it was fueled by frustration. 'You can see the frustration, he's kinda limping around … and he gets up and does it again,' Blake said. McEnroe replied, 'That's what I would do'. Blake added that Alcaraz's imitation was 'clear born out of frustration', before McEnroe chimed in, 'Yeah, no kidding ... I don't blame him'. Djokovic will now face No.2 seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, a rematch of their 2020 US Open final. Zverev advanced to the final four for the second consecutive year at the Australian Open, defeating world No.12 American Tommy Paul 7-6(7-1), 7-6(7-0), 2-6, 6-1. 'That's all I'm thinking about. Hopefully I can come out and feel my best because Sascha (Zverev) is playing some of the best tennis he has played,' Djokovic said
