Novak Djokovic has called on Wimbledon organizers to start play earlier on Centre Court each day to avoid later matches not finishing before curfew. Why is there a curfew and what did he say? charliefscott with more:
Reigning Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic has called on tournament organizers to start play 90 minutes earlier on Centre Court each day to avoid later matches not finishing before the 11 p.m. BST curfew.
Matches stop at 11 p.m. BST on Centre Court at Wimbledon because of a curfew imposed by the local council to prevent late-night disruption from people leaving the grounds, in what is a quiet, residential area in southwest London.due to a range of factors explored in this piece “Today , I’m thinking, I have at least an hour and a half. Then after 20 minutes, my match is called because there was a retirement in the ladies match before us .”
“We will have a look at that beyond this year’s Championships but that’s the real background to why we have the start time when we do. Matches are happening at a time when they’re accessible to people. We’re seeing [TV] viewing figures that are beyond our expectations and beyond previous years, so I think they probably speak for themselves.”
