Police are using DNA evidence to try and identify the attacker who sexually assaulted Jessie Lauder twice in her Newport home in 1981 and 1983. Lauder died in 1993 without an arrest being made. Investigators believe the offender lived in the area during that period and would be known to other locals. They are appealing for information from anyone who remembers a man matching the description.

Two year later, in July 1983, Ms Lauder was in her lounge room getting ready for bed when a man broke into her home around 9pm through the front door and sexually assaulted her again. They believe the offender lived in the area during that two-year period and would be known to other locals. He was described as being between 20 and 30 years of age, with a fair complexion, dark hair, and spoke with an Australian accent.Inspector Burnett said the Department of Public Prosecutions may also consider granting indemnity from prosecution to anyone who provided information about the principal offender.
