The federal government and the RACV have thrown their weight behind road safety technology that blocks Wi-Fi and phone calls while a person is driving a vehicle.

, where transport authorities are asking smartphone makers to develop a new 'driver mode', which would be similar to the airplane mode but also block apps, social media, videos and certain graphics that distract drivers.for tech companies that seek to restrict the apps and services a driver can use, while also calling for features that ensure passengers are not prevented from using their phones while a car is in motion.

The RACV is also calling for ways to implement mobile phone blocking technology, with research showing that drivers are four times more likely to be involved in a crash when talking on a phone, or using hands-free technology. The study also reached an unexpected finding: that motorists who use mobile phones frequently while driving are more willing to use apps that curb their phone use.

RACV Safety & Education Manager Elvira Lazar said motorists should use the ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving’ function on their phone, which the study showed significantly limited a driver's phone use.
