NSW Transport Minister David Elliott broke ranks to urge John Barilaro to do the “honourable” thing and withdraw from a plum US trade post.
Mr Elliott called on Mr Barilaro to resign before he starts the role on July 12.
“I’m very, very certain that he shouldn’t be going to New York, and I’m pretty sure that is the view of the majority of people in this state.”that she had offered the role of senior trade and investment commissioner to the Americas to a senior public servant before receiving a government directive to unwind the process. Mr Barilaro was named as the successful applicant at the end of a second recruitment process which kicked off in December.
“So far I have thought it appropriate that it was dealt with at a political level, but it’s fast approaching the situation where you think it would be something that should be referred to ICAC,” the barrister told“If an issue takes on any importance, it’s much better to be resolved in ICAC rather than a parliamentary inquiry .... [which has] a political bias, and what history has shown is that the public is far less likely to regard the outcome in that sort of arena as satisfactory.
On Thursday, a Labor spokesperson said the party was committed to the inquiry and believed it was the best avenue to probe the appointment.
