Esmond Dorney is widely celebrated for his groundbreaking modernist buildings in Tasmania and Melbourne, but about 100 of his designs are missing.

Esmond Dorney was expelled from his formal architecture studies at university for almost running over the dean in his sports car.

The listing raises the home's international profile while celebrating Dorney, whose work wasn't always widely accepted.James Henry Esmond Dorney was born in 1906 and made his mark on architecture working in Melbourne and Tasmania in the 1930s up until the 1980s. "Unfortunately they sacked him for nearly running down the dean while racing his sports car past the tram the dean was getting off," Mr Dorney said.

"Dad offered them change, where as the old firms were trying to build expensive stuff for rich guys who didn't have money."During World War II, Dorney narrowly escaped death while flying a Brewster Buffalo fighter aircraft with the RAF in Singapore."His job was so secret they didn't even tell his family — he was missing in action for years," Paddy said.

"I grew up in glass houses surrounded by views, animals and birdlife yet we lived in the city," Paddy said. His recognisable designs are dotted across Hobart's suburbs, from Sandy Bay to Berriedale and Bellerive.
