A report has claimed some hospitals in Beijing have up to 80 per cent of their healthcare staff infected with COVID-19 as cases skyrocket across the country in the wake of eased restrictions.

Some hospitals in Beijing have up to 80 per cent of their frontline infected, but many are still required to work to alleviate staff shortages, a doctor from a large public hospital in the capital told Reuters.

Since the winding back of China's stringent zero-COVID policy last week, Beijing has seen a rapid increase in the rate of new infections. “There’s a narrative that, in some way, China lifted the restrictions and all of a sudden, the disease is out of control,” WHO emergencies chief Michael Ryan said on Wednesday.
