A review of safety within NSW public hospitals has found “disturbing” accounts of rising aggressive and violent behaviour from doctors and nurses | Kaubo
Security in the state’s hospitals details a “culture of under-reporting” of violent incidents by hospital staff, especially in emergency departments , according to former police and health minister Peter Anderson tasked with conducting the review.
It did not recommend increasing security staff numbers, prompting criticism from the head of the health services union, who had hoped the report would back its call for an extra 250 security guards across the state.“It is about eliminating risk where possible,” such as ensuring “swipe” doors were not propped open and objects that could be used as weapons were not left lying around, the report read.
The review also recommended examining the need for security staff to carry batons and handcuffs, an issue on which doctors and nurses held strong and conflicting views. His office advised a statewide incident management system, rolled out over the next two years, to improve access to the most reliable information about incidents of violent behaviour in and around NSW hospitals.
