During a panel discussion running as part of IDFA’s Industry program on Monday, the festival’s senior editor Julia Yudelman explained that the festival had an accessibility audit done in 2019. That led to a list of recommendations on how to make IDFA and its market organizations more accessible. The fest also worked with a consultant who helped formulate a five-year plan to make the festival more inclusive both physically and virtually.

“When people think of disabled people in the world, they think that it’s not many when in reality the disability market is larger than China,” said Upson. “There are 1.4 billion disabled people in the world holding 13 trillion dollars in disposable income.” “We have over 600 members,” said Upson. “The majority are filmmakers with disabilities. I’ve seen their work. There’s not a lack of talent. Their projects should be here. If we had more easily accessible events and festivals, we would see more projects from disabled people.”

In recent years several film festivals, including Cannes and Sundance, have been criticized for their lack of accessibility.
