Director Jon Kasbe’s documentary 'When Lambs Becomes Lions' explores the issues surrounding elephant poaching

Photo Courtesy of Oscilloscope Laboratories.Director Jon Kasbe’s documentaryexplores the issues surrounding elephant poaching. At the epicenter are these gentle giants as they aim to survive amongst the poachers and rangers in their midst.

The only way for an outsider to do this was to become a part of their lives without judgment. “We can’t keep talking about the conservation crisis while ignoring the people living at the center of it. I knew I had to be accepted by the community if this was going to work.” Kasbe said the death of an elephant is nothing like he imagined. “I thought it would be a very visceral, violent death. In reality, it was a very slow, patient, meticulous process. Poachers would spend a week just creating the poison for the elephant and it’s different for each animal.”

There is eventually the sound of the elephant trumpeting, a sign to all the animal is dying. The poachers go in for the parts they can sell and the rangers run towards the scene trying to catch the poachers in the act. Rangers are expected to live in the bush 26 days out of the month and oftentimes don’t have basic necessities like boots, clean water, food or blankets. “I spoke with many hunters who said it would be much harder to bribe rangers who had better work conditions,” explains Kasbe. “In fact, many poachers claim they would consider switching sides for good, if it meant stable pay and proper resources.

Originally, Kasbe thought this would be another short film but quickly learned this issue is more complex than he realized. “There is the animal-human conflict, tribal conflicts and issues with the government.”... [+]Founder and CEO of, Dane Waters, tells me elephants are being poached for more than their ivory. “There are three primary causes for the death of elephants: ivory, skin and human-elephant conflict.
