LOS ANGELES ― All afternoon – all week, really – Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had heard questions centering around the magnitude of the New York Yankees’ first visit to Dodger Stadium in four years. The hype was understandable: two of Major League Baseball’s marquee franchises are playing each other three times this weekend, and only Friday’s game was not a national broadcast.
For Kershaw , who had not won a game since May 10, beating a hot and healthy Yankee team was no small feat. Giancarlo Stanton returned from the injured list and hit his fifth home run of the season. Josh Donaldson returned from the IL and hit his second.The three-time Cy Young Award winner allowed four hits in seven innings, walked one batter and struck out nine. The 35-year-old left-hander hadn’t pitched into the sixth inning, let alone the seventh, since his May 10 win in Milwaukee.
Betts also homered off reliever Ryan Weber and finished 4 for 4 with a walk and three RBIs. He hit two home runs for the second consecutive game, something he had not done since May 2016 as a member of the Boston Red Sox. His 22 multi-homer games out of the leadoff spot are the most in baseball history.
