SAN DIEGO — Clayton Kershaw will be back in Dodger blue next season.
The Dodgers officially announced Monday morning that the veteran left-hander had agreed to a one-year contract for 2023. It is Kershaw’s second consecutive one-year deal and gives him a raise to $20 million. With questions about his health a year ago,Early in the offseason, Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman called“a real priority for us” and said “things just feel more right in the world when Kershaw is wearing a Dodgers uniform.
Kershaw will wear it for a 16th season in 2023, tying him with Don Sutton for the longest tenure by a pitcher with the Dodger franchise. Kershaw moved past Sutton for thelast season. With three wins in 2023, Kershaw could join Don Drysdale and Sutton as the only pitchers to win 200 games with the Dodgers. Kershaw is also third behind Drysdale and Sutton in career starts for the team and fifth in franchise history in innings pitched.
Kershaw joins Julio Urias and Tony Gonsolin at the front of the Dodgers’ rotation for 2023. Dustin May is also expected to be in the rotation but the Dodgers are believed to be in the market for more starting pitching. One of their targets, 2022 AL Cy Young Award winner Justin Verlander, is off the market. The free agent has agreed to a two-year, $86 million deal with the New York Mets that includes a third year vesting option.
