Doechii's Alligator Bites Never Heal mixtape takes home the top prize, shattering expectations and inspiring young women in the process.
As soon as Cardi B , one of only two women to ever win the best rap album category, took the stage to announce the category's winner, the writing was on the wall: newcomer Doechii won the category with her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, upsetting the likes of Eminem and Future and becoming the first woman to win it since Cardi did in 2019. It's a beautiful moment.
The Florida native accepted in tears: “This category was introduced in 1989 and three women have won – Cardi B, Lauryn Hill, and Doechii!” she said to massive cheers. “I know that there is some black girl watching me right now, and I wanna say anything is possible: don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you, to tell you you can’t be here, that you’re too dark or that you’re not smart enough or you’re too dramatic or too loud,” she said. “You are exactly who you need to be right where you are and I am a testimony.” She received a standing ovation for the moment, including from Oprah’s friend Gayle King who was in tears on her feet.
