Why Miles' Dad Dying Is A Spider-Man Canon Event One of the key canon events placed at the forefront of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse's storyline is the death of a police Captain close to Spider-Man. In Across the Spider-Verse, Miles disrupts this canon event by saving Captain Singh in Mumbattan, home to Pavitr Prabhakar's Spider-Man: India. If Miles hadn't intervened, Captain Singh would have died while saving a child during the accident at that reality's Alchemax.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse explored the days in the lead-up to Jefferson Davis' promotion to police Captain, effectively putting his head on the chopping block in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Miles Morales' new archenemy, the Spot, even implied that he would ensure this canon event was fulfilled so that he can make Miles suffer, even though Miles may be able to find a way to change this event and save his father's life.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also showed clear connections to the live-action Spider-Man films produced by both Sony and Marvel Studios, but not all of these stories followed the same canon events either. Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man didn't suffer the loss of a police Captain, nor Mary Jane Watson or Gwen Stacy, though it did follow certain other canon events.
