“My biggest fear is going up to a guy and trying to chat him up only for his girlfriend to come over and slide her arm territorially around his hip.”

That never happens now, I’m not sure why, because I look better and I am better. I suppose I did put myself out there a lot more back then. I slid napkins with my number on them towards waiters, told friends that if their friend so-and-so wanted to take me out then I’d be keen. I said yes to everything, to dates with guys with big clunky hats on their heads that I hated, to others who were just rude.

I decide to get up off my ass and actually try for the first time in ages. A guy comes out of the club I’m walking into, and I say hi and introduce myself. It’s fun, and it makes me think about all the times I’ve been out where there’s been hot guys and I’ve just looked at them and then complained that dating is shit because they haven’t come over.

Things change after that night; stuff keeps falling into my lap. I flirt with a guy while he sells me a watermelon vape, and when I’m leaving, he runs out of the club after me and gets my number. I kiss someone through thick club smoke. I don’t think I’d date either of them, but it’s fun anyway. I hold onto stares. I turn to someone next to me on the Tube and say, “That’s some really good juice” about the Sun Exotic carton on his lap, which is maybe a bit far.
