Comments on recent ABC social media posts about corporal punishment and abortion left little doubt about how Australians feel about the sunshine state.University of Queensland political scientist Adam Hannah says "right-wing populist" or "agrarian populist" are the best terms to describe KAP's position in the political landscape.
There is also evidence suggesting a majority of Queenslanders support women having the right to choose a termination.Polling commissioned by the Queensland Council of Unions and conducted in August by Labor-aligned DemosAU found 75 per cent of Queenslanders agree that abortion should remain decriminalised.
Pollster Kos Samaras told the ABC Labor preferences could hand the KAP the Far North Queensland seat of Cook, thus possibly increasing the minor party's presence in the next Queensland parliament. Dr Hannah says populist appeals "often" have a racial element — "whether that is targeting immigrants or Indigenous people".
"Northern and western Queensland are a long way away from Brisbane and even further from Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra. I note this isn't a Queensland-based phenomenon though — trust in major parties has been declining in Australia for some time."UQ voter attitude researcher Frank Mols says it's way too simplistic to suggest Queenslanders are more conservative than the rest of Australia.
