A dolphin was found dead at a popular Sydney beach after drone footage spotted it tangled in a net.

Drone Shark App, a shark spotting mobile platform, found a dolphin floating in the waters at Bronte Beach in Sydney’s east on Thursday afternoon. The company revealed a video of the discovery in a social media post, where the drone pilot was heard saying “please don’t be a dolphin” moments before they were able to get a better look.Action for Dolphins chief operating officer Emilia Michael said the dolphin was left struggling for hours in Bronte’s shark nets.

“Imagine the horror of the residents of Bronte and surrounds waking today to learn that one of their favourite ocean animals was trapped in these killer nets off their own coasts.”She claimed the nets do not protect ocean users as 92 per cent of marine life caught in the past 22 years were innocent victims – including turtles and dolphins.

Ms Michael said it was time to ditch the nets and “ramp up the modern shark mitigation technology” including drone surveillance, beach patrol and shark listening stations.
