Data shows people living in regional Victoria are almost twice as likely to experience family violence as those living in metropolitan areas — a shocking gap that is growing year-on-year.

There were constant phone calls, visits to her work when she didn't answer, and then put downs, name calling and general degradation. Anne says she was later contacted by a member of her community who warned her about serious threats to her and her children's safety. It found the 2023-24 rate of family incidents per 100,000 people in regional Victoria was 2,157, compared to the metro rate of 1,172 — an 84 per cent difference.
The data analysis also found regional Victorians are vastly more likely to be victims of specific crimes, with the offence rates of seven family violence crime subgroups anywhere from 46 to 120 per cent higher in the regions. Of at least eight women allegedly killed by a man in Victoria since the start of the year, five were from regional Victoria.Researcher Lata Satyen is an associate professor at Deakin University's School of Psychology, and is the co-convenor of the Deakin Network Against Gendered Violence.
"So, we need to understand why regionality and remoteness are actually huge risk factors for women experiencing extensive family domestic and sexual violence," Dr Satyen says. "Men's violence against women generally is not about stranger danger, it's about men they know — and it's almost always men.In the 90s, Dr Laming was at the forefront of researching and pushing for the establishment of men's behaviour change programs in a bid to prevent at-risk men from harming their families.
"There's lots of speculation … but it does come down to financial hardship, loss of industry in our local communities, lack of housing and those added complexities of mental health and drug and alcohol abuse in regional areas," she says.
