A regional domestic violence service says the time to rehome women and children has more than doubled since last year amid the national housing crisis.

Women and children are waiting in DV refuges as services struggle to find homes for people escaping domestic and family violence .

"Twelve to 18 months ago, we were able to house clients straight from our refuge into permanent accommodation," chief executive Lyne Booth said. She said the service aimed to transition women and children into a home within three months of arriving at the refuge, but now it had clients staying for at least six months, which could delay their recovery.

She said her family faced many challenges while sleeping rough, including violence, interacting with people with drug addictions and stealing. While pleased to have secured social housing, the woman said the high cost of living and having to "start from scratch again" was challenging."It's very hard. For example, one week, I get $500, and that just covers food and fuel by the time other bills come out.

She said there were currently fewer properties available for rent than at this time five years ago, and population migration post-COVID was contributing to the high demand.Queensland Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon said she was focused on building 1 million more homes, including 53,500 social homes.

The LNP has promised 10 new and replaced DFV shelters to provide emergency accommodation to vulnerable women and children.
