Icon Defoe, otherwise known as ‘Mr 27,’ has been a part of the Newcastle Eagles since 2005, when he made the move up north from London at the age of 18AS PART of Black History month, we are celebrating the British Basketball League’s most decorated player, Darius Defoe.
The rest was history as Darius collected an outstanding 27 titles with the team, and he is now looking to give back and help younger generations.spoke to Darius about his journey and his position as a role model and much more…I was basically the tallest in school and didn’t know what direction I was going to go into sports wise. One of my PE teachers told me, ‘You’re too tall to not play basketball.’ At that point, the only thing I could do is just run and jump.
Just being their coach, being there to help them, and see them listening to the advice you’ve given them means a lot.It means a lot to me, going into schools, seeing the kids’ faces, how excited and happy they are for someone to come into their school and talk to them. Doing Hoops 4 Health, you go there and talk about different lifestyles, exercise and to see the kids all glued in and want to listen and learn makes me happy.
Before I had kids, I said to myself when I have kids, I would like to go to my daughter’s school to do Hoops 4 Health in her school, which I have now done.
