A franchisee running more than a dozen Domino's pizza outlets in two states has been banned from employing trainees and apprentices at 12 SA stores, after an investigation by a workplace watchdog.

A franchisee operating a dozen Domino's pizza stores in SA has been banned from employing trainees and apprentices.

"By putting someone through a traineeship you, as the employer, are able to employ them at a reduced wage rate," he said.According to both Mr Baker and the state government, franchisee Team Van Diemen SA Pty Ltd — which operates "over a quarter" of the Domino's stores in SA — was paying trainee wages without meeting its training obligations, as set out under the state's Skills Act.

"I took direct action to terminate 145 contracts last year due to a clear lack of off-job training provided to those trainees." "In this instance, the trainees that were affected were never given an opportunity to undertake the training in the first place — they weren't released from the workplace, in the majority of cases, to actually undertake … food handling safety training," Mr Baker said.

"Domino's was not aware of the circumstances leading to the franchisee being named on the Prohibited Employer Register. We take these allegations seriously and are reviewing this matter as a priority," the spokesperson said. "The advantage for the trainee is a nationally recognised certificate that they can use to get work in a whole range of industries right across Australia.
