The notorious Don Dale Youth Detention Centre may be repurposed into an adult prison, under plans being considered by the Northern Territory Corrections Department.the Don Dale facility once it closes, in line with the recommendations of the 2017 Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory.
Government ministers, including Ms Lawler, have repeatedly referred to demolishing Don Dale once children leave the facility, but never mentioned it was referring to the original, now-abandoned building. The commission's final report made 227 recommendations, including that the government close Don Dale by February 2018.The NT Corrections department told the ABC its commissioner, Matthew Varley, is considering options for the facility's future ahead of the looming territory budget, set to be handed down on May 14.
