ABC managing director David Anderson has backed in star reporter Laura Tingle's right to call Opposition Leader Peter Dutton's budget reply speech 'dangerous' in a tense Senate Estimates hearing.

ABC managing director David Anderson has told Senate Estimates he was not"embarrassed" by Laura Tingle 's comments branding Australia a"racist" country, despite conceding she had made an"error" by publicly airing the claim. ABC managing director David Anderson has backed in star reporter Laura Tingle 's right to call Opposition Leader Peter Dutton 's budget reply speech"dangerous" in a tense Senate Estimates hearing.

Asked by Senator Henderson whether he believed Ms Tingle had failed to meet the broadcaster's editorial standards, Mr Anderson echoed the words of ABC news director Justin Stevens, who had admonished the senior reporter on Wednesday. In a testy back and forth with Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson, the ABC boss conceded Ms Tingle had made an"error" in airing the comments, but defended her reporting record against suggestions of bias. Pressing further, Senator Henderson asked whether Mr Anderson had been embarrassed by Ms Tingle's words, to which he responded by again referencing Mr Stevens' statement and insisting the broadcaster was"very careful" in ensuring staff upheld editorial standards."I think what Mr Stevens' note sets out, it does a number of things.

"I think what was concerning is for a political leader to come out and say not only is housing the fault of migrants, but you can't get a childcare space, you can't get through the traffic on the roads, you can't get in to see the doctor because of migration - that is lighting this thing up in a really disturbing way," she said.

"Are you aware of the comments that she made on the Insiders program on the 19th of May, when she made reference to Mr Dutton's budget reply, where he made a very strong commitment to reduce immigration in this country, and she said the hot buttons he's pressing that are very dangerous for our community?"
