A senior Labor Senator has demanded Peter Dutton stop “interfering” in the voting processes for the upcoming Voice to Parliament referendum, following outrage from the Opposition Leader over the Australian Electoral Commission’s (AEC) ballot paper rules.
earlier this week, new provisions will be rolled out on referendum day to ensure maximum voter intention is captured, wherein people will be allowed to put a tick to vote ‘Yes’ vote for the question but cannot put a cross to indicate a ‘No’.
Federal Labor MP Murray Watt has accused Peter Dutton of running another"scare campaign" with his opposition to the AEC's voting rules. Picture: Dan Peled / NCA NewsWire “There’s a very simple answer here which is that all people have got to do is either vote yes or no, that’s the way around this.”was another attempt at driving negative public opinion towards the constitutional reform proposed by the government.
“What this is really all about is listening to Aboriginal people to get better results and better value for money… Peter Dutton seems to be determined to talk about anything other than that, whether it be about ticks, crosses, or inventing scare campaigns about what might happen under a Voice to Parliament.”
“I mean, if a tick counts for yes then a cross should count for no...otherwise it gives a very strong advantage to the yes case… and if legislation’s required to clarify this then we’ve got plenty of time, parliament’s back the week after next and we would support a sensible bill to clarify.A referendum requires legislation to pass parliament. The legislation that passed parliament outlines a single question only.
"We expect the vast, vast majority of voters to follow those instructions," an AEC spokesperson told SkyNews.com.au.
