While answering questions outside of the White House Friday morning President Donald Trump called Confederate general Robert E. Lee “a great general.”
In response to the deadly riot, which featured white supremacists and neo-Nazis holding tiki torches and chanting"Jews will not replace us," Trump said that there were “very fine people” on both sides, comments he backed up on Friday. He went on to explain that even people at the White House thought Lee was one of the best generals in history. “Whether you like it or not, he was one of the great generals. I’ve spoken to many generals here, right at the White House, and many people thought, of the generals they think that he was maybe their favorite general. People were there protesting the taking down of the monument of Robert E. Lee, everybody knows that,” he said.
