US President Donald Trump commutes the sentence for long-time friend and adviser Roger Stone, who had been jailed for lying to Congress during the Russia probe, the White House says.

US President Donald Trump has commuted the prison sentence for long-time friend and adviser Roger Stone, who was jailed for lying to Congress during the Russia probe, the White House says."He was treated very unfairly, as were many others in this case. Roger Stone is now a free man."

"Not only was Mr Stone charged by overzealous prosecutors pursing a case that never should have existed, and arrested in an operation that never should have been approved, but there were also serious questions about the jury in the case," she said in a statement. Mr Trump appeared to flag his decision earlier in the day when he said he was "looking at" pardoning Stone.

Mr Stone was celebrating in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with conservative friends and said he had to change rooms because there were "too many people opening bottles of Champagne here".
