Breaking Donald Trump has been acquitted of inciting the insurrection, with just seven Republican senators voting in favour of impeaching him.

Donald Trump has issued a statement decrying the impeachment trial against him as a"witch hunt", after he was acquitted on charges of inciting the deadly 6 January riot at the Capitol.A two-thirds majority of 67 votes in favour of impeachment was required to impeach Mr Trump.In a statement released immediately after the vote, the office of the former president said"this has been yet another phase of the greatest witch hunt in the history of our Country".

The impeachment charge, passed in January by the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives, stated that Mr Trump had “threatened the integrity of the democratic system, interfered with the peaceful transition of power, and imperiled a co-equal branch of government”. “It’s now clear beyond doubt that Trump supported the actions of the mob…and so he must be convicted.
