Former president had sought to post a $100mn bond instead of the full amount as he pursues an appeal

A New York judge has denied Donald Trump’s request to temporarily stop the state’s attorney-general from collecting on a $450mn judgment as he appeals against the civil fraud ruling, an outcome that the former president’s attorneys had warned could force him to sell off pieces of his property empire.

The upshot of Wednesday’s ruling is that “Trump must post a bond and, until then, the attorney-general can direct a New York City sheriff or marshal to walk into a bank or other financial institution and directly execute on Trump’s assets,” New York lawyer Adam Pollock said. “And, conveniently, the AG already knows where he banks.” Given the sums at stake, Trump would have to turn to one of a handful of large insurers.
