A previously stalled probe over alleged pay-offs to a porn star has led to the first criminal trial against a former US president that starts this week.
Already a subscriber? In March 2021, an investigation into payments allegedly made by Donald Trump to buy the silence of a porn star was, in the view of Manhattan prosecutors tasked with pursuing the former president, dead and buried.
For six weeks, the presumptive Republican nominee for president will be forced off the campaign trail to sit in a Manhattan courtroom and fight a potential conviction that could make him the first felon to enter the White House. While the charge of “falsifying business records” is commonly brought in New York state, it is rarely the senior offence in an indictment, and has never before been tied to a federal campaign finance violation.
“Voters didn’t have any right to see them — you couldn’t influence any voters or influence the election,” he added. Yet, it is the New York state court system that has proven most resilient to the former president’s go-to legal tactic of trying to delay proceedings by any means necessary, including accusing the judge of bias and claiming the local jury pool is tainted by persistent press coverage of Trump’s misdeeds.
