Donald Trump warns Kevin Rudd that his tenure as ambassador is at risk should he win the presidency in November. Follow updates here.

Donald Trump has delivered a stern ultimatum to Kevin Rudd, warning the former Australian prime minister that his tenure as ambassador to the United States hangs in the balance should he win the presidency in November.

Rudd replaced Joe Hockey as the Australian envoy to the US in March 2023 after he had been vocal critic of Trump, branding him “the most destructive president in history”. Asked on Sky News about Rudd’s previous attacks, Trump, who is the presumptive Republican nominee for this year’s elections, said: “I don’t know much about him, I heard he was a little bit nasty.” “I hear he is not the brightest bulb, but I don’t know much about him. If he is at all hostile, he will not be there long,” he said. Rudd has criticised Trump on numerous occasions, saying in early 2022 that he was a “traitor to the West” and was guilty of “rancid treachery”. In his book published in 2022, he made several disparaging references to Trump, calling either him or his administration “mercurial”, “episodically hard-line”, possessing a “preoccupation with low tech industries” and that his trade war “failed to dent China’s dominance,” The Australian Financial Review’s US correspondent Matthew Cranston writes. He has also described Trump administration visits to Taiwan as, “provocative and unnecessary high-level visits to Taipei”.
