The Cavs fought back, but it wasn’t enough.
All-Star center Jarrett Allen matched Mitchell with 24 points on 12-of-17 shooting. He grabbed 12 rebounds, recording his 18th double-double. Allen took advantage of the Knicks not having defensive-minded starting center Mitchell Robinson, who was sidelined for the third straight game after surgery on his thumb.
The Knicks were led by Julius Randle, who spearheaded New York’s 3-point heavy attack. Randle had a game-high 36 points. He went 8 of 12 from long range. In all, the Knicks buried 17 triples, shooting 51.5% from deep. RJ Barrett chipped in with 16 points. Jalen Brunson had 14. Even though the Cavs trailed for much of the first half, they came out of the halftime locker room with some extra juice, scoring seven unanswered points in the third quarter and taking their first lead since the opening minutes. Only they couldn’t sustain it. The Knicks finished the third on a 19-6 surge over the final five minutes of the period, claiming a five-point edge going into the fourth. That New York run coincided with Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff going to his bench.
