Lillard wanted Miami. Mitchell wanted New York. In years' past, want alone might've been enough to get them there. But small markets like Cleveland and Milwaukee are proving that merit still counts in the nomadic NBA.
Durant left Oklahoma City for the Bay Area in 2016 after pushing the Warriors to seven games in that year’s Western Conference Finals. LeBron left Cleveland for Los Angeles in 2018 after the Cavs appeared in four straight NBA Finals while the Lakers posted six straight losing seasons. And Kawhi Leonard left Toronto for the Clippers after winning a championship with the Raptors.
But the Cavs and Bucks thumb their noses at history. They want their midwestern fans to have the same chance a title as the courtside celebrities at Madison Square Garden or tardy beach bums in Miami. And they believe their rosters are good enough to change Lillard’s and Mitchell’s minds about where to play.
Of course, their fighting spirits can only lead so far. The Bucks can’t know how much time they bought with Antetokounmpo, who can be a free agent in 2025, by trading for the 33-year-old Lillard. And the Cavs can already hear the free-agent clock ticking on Mitchell, who can opt out of his contract the same year.
