A senior former Treasury official controversially axed by Liz Truss to pave the way for her disastrous mini-Budget has been awarded a double knighthood originally proposed under Boris Johnson 🔴 Exclusive from singharj
stood down as Cabinet Secretary in September 2020 amid clashes with the former prime minister’s allies, including Dominic Cummings.
But he was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George in an honours list drawn up largely when Mr Johnson was still in No 10. Elsewhere, two senior MPs who were thorns in the side of Mr Johnson were recognised in the honours list. Conservative Julian Lewis, who chairs Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee and Labour’s Chris Bryant, who chairs the Commons Standards Committee, were both knighted.
Sir Julian confounded Mr Johnson’s plans to install former transport secretary, Chris Grayling, as ISC chairman by beating him to the post with opposition votes, a move which temporarily cost him the Tory whip.
